The Morrell Mills Dam was constructed in the eighteenth century for the purpose of providing waterpower for the operation of a sawmill. The impounded water created the 180 acre lake, Bauneg Beg Lake, having water depths up to 29 feet, with its easterly shores being in Sanford and its westerly shores in North Berwick.
